About Charlie Pitcher
Originally from the East Coast, Charlie was born into a family from a traditional sailing background and is no stranger to wet and windy weather! With a long list of international racing to his credit over the years, he then became an RYA Racing Coach for Youth and Women's Match Racing whilst operating the RYA National Match Racing Championships for many years. The “B” side to this enviable lifestyle was working in the London based family building business, which he joined at the tender age of sixteen. Thirty years on, Charlie is now a partner in a busy company based in London.
After leaving the world of sailing to start a family and make a “traditional living”, Charlie now lives with his wife Emma and his three sons, Tim, James and Freddie. His eldest and only daughter, Lottie, having left home to seek her fortune in the South West Country.
“Lottie and Freddie are just like me, but Freddie is the chip off the old block. Tim has the brains and academic mind I never had and James looks set to follow closely behind. So in all I really have a mixed bag of sweets!” Having been married before, his first wife Sally is now a Godmother to Freddie. Happy families!
With a life long passion for the healthy outdoor life including all mountain and water
sports and everything in between, more recently Charlie has spent some time coaching
and running racing for the younger members of the Royal Burnham Yacht Club. But for
the last 18 months, he has been concentrating on specific training for his Ultra Desert
Marathon and the Atlantic Rowing Race.
“If all goes to plan, I think I will be the first person to complete “The toughest foot
race on Earth” and “The World's toughest rowing race” in the same year. I've always
wanted to do the Marathon Des Sables, but it was Emma who put the rowing idea in my
head. When She gave me Ben Fogle and James Cracknell's book for Christmas in 2006, I
said that would be the ultimate challenge, but she wasn't listening”. The rest is
history!
