Charlie's B(oat)LOG

25th February 2010 - Day 53 - Land in sight!

David writes:

Another quick call from Charlie - he can see Antigua!

He sighted land at 6:50am local time (10:50am GMT) and is around 28 miles out with a following NE wind. Unfortunately, this wind is not forecast to last but Charlie is hoping to make the finish later today - perhaps even by early afternoon (local time).

The sea-anchor was required twice last night due to the conditions. Charlie says he is feeling very mixed emotions. As ever, he sounded strong and determined and eager to get back to ROWING FOR THE FINISH!

UPDATE:

Thanks to Poul and Sophia in Antigua who have posted:

"However, others might be interested to know.  Wind has gone to the East as predicted and is holding up nicely right now; time is 10.10[am] and you are less than 18 miles away.

Shoreteam is getting ready to leave by 12.30; your eta at the moment is around 16.00 local time."

See the whole post below.

UPDATE (19:40 GMT):

Thanks to Chris Lidstone who has posted:

"Just to say that Jenny has just phoned us to say that you had been met at sea by the family, and no doubt by many others.  She also said that you have about 5 miles to go."

See the whole post below.

UPDATE (21:05 GMT):

From the comments, it looks as though Charlie has arrived. Congratulations Charlie on winning the 2009 Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race!

When you get your land legs back, we hope the dance by the light of the silvery moon with Emma on the beach is accompanied by many rum punches and great island music.

We can't wait to read the book about your journey,  that is if you are home long enough to write it.

Great interview with Jenny this morning, your mom looks so proud, as are so many of us.

Well done Charlie! Follow the green haze above Shirley Heights. Your assistant meteorologist Churner put most of it there in 1998. Fantastic effort and I hope adjusting back to normal is as easy as it can be mate. Your first ride in a car will feel like a trip in a rocket! Love from us all

Charlie, we are so relieved to see you are on the move - and in sight of land now.  Don't get too twisted a neck - you'll be needing it later for all the celebratory drinks! Lap up every minute of your arrival - you have surely earned it!!!

I think in The Crossing they lost their way and couldn't find the finish line! No chance of that today - I suspect there will be an escort, air horns and loads of shouting and screaming.

Just a few more strokes (7,500?)

We,ll be a shouting and a screaming here when we hear the news

Hi Charlie,

You have no time to read this message as you must be rowing like mad considering the ground you are covering at the moment. However, others might be interested to know.  Wind has gone to the East as predicted and is holding up nicely right now; time is 10.10 and you are less than 18 miles away.

Shoreteam is getting ready to leave by 12.30; your eta at the moment is around 16.00 local time.

See you shortly. Poul and Sophia

Land ahoy!

To have Antigua in sight at last must be unbelievable. Don't forget to get dressed before everyone comes out to meet and greet you otherwise they might get a bit more than they bargained for.

Now the race will be on as to who can see you first, the whole of Antigua must be a buzz with excitement.Enjoy yourself!

We were so sad we missed you by one day, we know how hard you rowed. Steve kept James and Freddie very busy as I am sure they have told you by now. Especially the story of the octopus! Emma and I made up for it dealing with the drinks trolley that came past regularly!! Look out for Fred.  I believe that whale was with you the whole way, just watching over you. He signed off at the finish. We cried tears of sheer joy.  I have been in constant contact with Tim and Lot, you have two very proud children back here, they are over the moon and also extremely happy that their dad is safe and well.  Enjoy the rest with all your wonderful family around you, you deserve it. Oh by the way, Emma is an amasing lady, you are a very lucky man. Big hugs from us all, see you very soon. Sal and Steve x

Eureka
You wouldn't know how frustrated I have been lately. I can get over most things, if not by reason, then with brute force! I have not been able to "suss" the steering system on my boat, until last Saturday...

From strength to strength
I've had the boat out in the North Sea and spent a few nights on board. I think there is a tiny bit of video coverage on Utube, not your North face of the Eigar though...

The May moan (short and sweet)
I thought it best to leave the blog for a while, otherwise it becomes less interesting? Anyway, since the beginning of May, so much has happened in terms of business, projects, training and so on...

Wrong shift
Picked the wrong shift after my last blog! I've been horizontal and off training for 13 days, I've shrivelled up and all my hard work has gone backwards 2 months and down 3 kilos! Pretty ****ed off, but what can you do? I blame all those lowsy people who commute to work giving their ***t  to others when they should be in bed!! To make things easier on myself, last night I designed my own sleeping bag from PHD and ordered it online. How co..

Earlscourt Boatshow visit
I took the family to the boatshow today. It was perfect weather for it, cold and drizzly!
