Charlie's B(oat)LOG

27th February 2010 - ARRIVED...OVERWHELMED...OK NOW!

This is to say I haven't switched off as I have finished, only that I've needed 24 hours to get back to a level such that I can say it's all over for me. I am going to post a full report on how it has been for me over the last 48 hours, a lot to tell, but not just now..later today when I can sit in quiet place and reflect.

I HAVE WON THE RACE! Yeah , it's job done and I am floating. I finished at 2017 hrs GMT) on 25th February making a crossing time of just six hours over 52 days. This is a new British Solo Record and the first time a Solo boat has ever won the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race.

My mind has not registered that it is all over, which I find very confusing, but my body is definitely in shut down mode and hurting.

I am a very lucky man to have all the support you have all given me, but must now re - focus on the rowers who are still racing and give them as much encouragement as possible over the next few weeks. They are the only thing I can think of at the moment, but more on this later..

Full report on it's way, then I'll continue to report on how I see things happening, what I am experiencing etc post race for a while.

Still can't believe it's curtains. This is most definitely the hardest thing I have ever done in my life so far.

Hello Charlie

We went to the club yesterday lunchtime intending to spread the news of you victory, but all prsent knew all about it and were agog at your achievements.

Jenny seems to be spending most of her time being interviewed by the media. She invited J and myself over yesterday evening for a drink and to watch the 'Look East' news. Your exploits took precedence over all other sports news - despite it being Saturday.

Enjoy yourselves.

C & J

Hi Charlie

CONGRATULATIONS again on your wonderful achievement.

Take it easy till your body recovers, and your mind can relax. Enjoy your win,  you really do deserve it,  while supporting your fellow competitors, you must feel for them knowing what they are having to endure.

Your Auntie Susie is emailing me and keeping me up with what's going on in the news in UK, sounds great, shame we're missing it here, it might help if I could work out how to use Rik's complicated computer operated TV system!! I need David.

Have a wonderful time on the island with your family, it's a great place to be this time of year, make the most of it, I hear it's raining in England! again!

love and best wishes to you all

Nikki, Richard, Elissa, Sam and Olivia (and Danny, still stuck in Bradwell)

Hi Charlie!

I can now safely break superstitious "radio silence" as the worst that can happen to you is you get a nasty sunburn from falling asleep alongside the pool.

Absolutely amazing Charlie, bloody well done! I have been following your progress/blogs daily and not dared to mail you in case I broke the spell. I am in awe of your preparation and application. Look forward to a thorough debriefing over a proper pint and a burger.

Enjoy your rest

Dear Charlie,

Many congratulations on your well-deserved win. What you have achieved is nothing short of remarkable. We shall miss your entertaining daily blogs. Thank you also for having been so supportive and helpful to Olli and James; we're sure that your considerable input in terms of advice and encouragement contributed greatly to their own success in the pairs class.

With warmest wishes to you and your entire family. It was great to catch up with you all again in Antigua!

Best wishes and heartiest congratulations,

Ed & Susie Back

At least for a short time. On Monday, I handed over my 5.75m "InsureandGo" rowing boat to the shippers and hope to see her again in a few weeks time after our separate journeys to La Gomera...

We have AIS!
I'm going to keep this short as Muggins here has lost the last four Blog entries over the last month! Don't ask me why, but when you sit down and create three wonderful paragraphs of facts, humour and porkies over an hour, press the wrong button and it all buggers off into oblivion, tears of hatred and rage start rolling down your face...

Eureka
You wouldn't know how frustrated I have been lately. I can get over most things, if not by reason, then with brute force! I have not been able to "suss" the steering system on my boat, until last Saturday...

Wrong shift
Picked the wrong shift after my last blog! I've been horizontal and off training for 13 days, I've shrivelled up and all my hard work has gone backwards 2 months and down 3 kilos! Pretty ****ed off, but what can you do? I blame all those lowsy people who commute to work giving their ***t  to others when they should be in bed!! To make things easier on myself, last night I designed my own sleeping bag from PHD and ordered it online. How co..

Earlscourt Boatshow visit
I took the family to the boatshow today. It was perfect weather for it, cold and drizzly!
