A little bit about Charlie..

Originally from the East Coast, Charlie was born into a family from a traditional sailing background and is no stranger to wet and windy weather! With a long list of international racing to his credit over the years, he then became an RYA Racing Coach for Youth and Women's Match Racing whilst operating the RYA National Match Racing Championships for many years.

With a life long passion for the healthy outdoor life including all mountain and water sports and everything in between, more recently Charlie has spent some time coaching and running racing for the younger members of the Royal Burnham Yacht Club.

After competing in the 2009 Marathon des Sables Charlie has been 100% committed to his training and eventual start of the Atlantic Rowing Race, which is now underway. Charlie is undertaking these challenges for charity, in memory of his friend Shaun McLeod-Jones. Charlie is aiming to be the first person to complete both challenges within one year.

Charlie is husband to Emma and together they have four children; Lottie, Tim, James and Freddie. But although having so much commitment made to training and competing, Charlie still has plenty of time spent around his family and also at his busy London based company in which he is a partner for.

Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race

Starting from La Gomera in the Canary Islands and finishing in Antigua, the race can take anything between 50 - 90 days to complete. This event is perhaps best known for the crossing of James Cracknell and Ben Fogle in the 2005 race, the documentary of which was shown on BBC1, 'Through Hell and High Water'.

The race itself is a 2,931 mile (4,727km) journey across the Atlantic Ocean in nothing other than a small rowing boat, battling against sleep deprevation, salt sores and the physical extremes that the row will inflict.

Due to start in December 2009, the race start was defferred due to bad weather until January 4th 2010.

Marathon des Sables

In April 2009 Charlie took part in what is known as an ultra-marathon and the toughest foot race on earth, the Marathon des Sables.

This six-day endurance event requires participants to run on consecutive days 25km, 34km, 38km, 82km, 42km and 22km, which is equivalent to five and a half normal marathons. The Marathon des Sables is run across the Sahara Desert in Morocco, where temperatures reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and 15-20% of the race is run on sand dunes.

Having to battle against the extreme temperature, the uncomfortable terain and of course fatigue, this was the perfect opportunity for Charlie to put to test his physical endurance and mental strength before the Woodvale Atlantic rowing race, which was due to start in December 2009.
